AMD Unveils New RX 6000 Series GPUs for Laptops and Budget-Friendly RX 6500 XT for Desktops

At CES 2022, AMD announced a new lineup of Radeon RX 6000 Series mobile GPUs and the highly anticipated RX 6500 XT desktop graphics card, targeting budget-conscious gamers. AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su introduced the new GPUs during a virtual presentation, highlighting options ranging from entry-level to enthusiast-grade performance for laptops.

Expanding the Mobile Lineup: Radeon RX 6000M Series

Following the release of the RX 6800M, AMD expands its mobile GPU offerings with the Radeon RX 6850M XT, RX 6650M XT, RX 6650M, RX 6500M, and RX 6300M. All leverage AMD’s advanced RDNA 2 architecture. Additionally, AMD launched the Radeon RX 6800S, RX 6700S, and RX 6600S, optimized for power efficiency in thin and light ultrabooks.

The flagship Radeon RX 6850M XT targets high-end gaming laptops, delivering smooth 1440p gaming with a reported 7% performance increase over the RX 6800M. Meanwhile, the power-efficient Radeon RX 6800S, with a 100W TDP, aims to deliver over 100fps at 1080p in most tested titles, promising a performance boost for ultrathin laptops under 2kg.

The Budget Gaming Champion: RX 6500 XT

AMD also introduced budget-friendly desktop graphics cards: the RX 6500 XT and RX 6400. The RX 6500 XT, one of the first GPUs built on TSMC’s 6nm process node, utilizes the RDNA 2 architecture. It features 16 Compute Units (CUs), 16 Ray Tracing cores, and 4GB of GDDR6 memory.

While the RX 6600 targets high settings at 1080p in demanding games, the RX 6500 XT aims for high settings at 1080p in newer titles. AMD’s initial tests show the RX 6500 XT achieving average frame rates of 108fps in Resident Evil: Village, 78fps in Halo Infinite, and 61fps in Call of Duty: Vanguard at 1080p with high settings. The RX 6400, a lower-tier option, primarily targets OEMs.

Availability and Pricing

The RX 6500 XT launched on January 19th with an MSRP of $199. The new mobile GPUs are expected to be available in laptops from various manufacturers throughout 2022.
