Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning Review: A Reforged Classic or a Rusty Relic?

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning revisits the original 2012 action RPG, initially envisioned as an MMORPG. Despite the shift to single-player, the original sold nearly 1.2 million copies within 90 days and received widespread acclaim. Following the unfortunate demise of 38 Studios, the IP lay dormant until THQ Nordic acquired the rights in 2018, leading to this remaster for modern platforms. But does Re-Reckoning recapture the magic, or is it simply a relic of the past?

Disappointments: A Dated Experience

While promising graphical enhancements, including 4K resolution support, Re-Reckoning falls short of expectations. The visual improvements are marginal at best, leaving the game looking noticeably dated compared to modern RPGs. The gameplay loop, while initially engaging, quickly becomes repetitive. Players spend the majority of their time accepting quests, completing objectives, and returning for their reward.

Exploring the vast world of Faelands loses its luster due to the aging graphics and recycled content from the original release. The core gameplay of fighting, looting, and questing lacks innovation and can feel tedious after a few hours. The inclusion of all DLC feels more like a “Game of the Year” edition released a generation too late.

Triumphs: Engaging Combat and a Rich Narrative

Penned by renowned fantasy author R.A. Salvatore (The DemonWars Saga, The Legend of Drizzt), Re-Reckoning boasts a compelling narrative centered around the “Crystal War” and its aftermath. While the initial hours can feel slow, the story picks up momentum and becomes increasingly captivating as you progress.

Though intended as an MMO, the single-player focus allows for a wealth of content, reminiscent of online RPGs. Frequent enemy encounters, hidden treasure chests, and a robust loot system encourage exploration and character progression. The combat system remains a highlight, offering fluid and accessible action. Switching between two weapon sets and utilizing four ability slots allows for dynamic combos and strategic play.

The Journey of the Fateless One

Players embody the “Fateless One,” resurrected by the Well of Souls, embarking on a quest to discover their true identity and the reason for their unique revival. Extensive character customization options, including race, deity, and appearance, allow for personalized playthroughs.

Progression revolves around Abilities, Destinies, and Skills. Abilities (Might, Finesse, Sorcery) dictate combat style, while Destinies offer passive bonuses and unique playstyles. Skills focus on crafting and item discovery. The flexible system encourages experimentation, allowing players to respec their characters with Fateweavers if desired. This freedom to redefine your build adds significant replay value.

Conclusion: A Mixed Bag

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning offers a captivating world, engaging combat, and a rich narrative. However, the dated visuals and repetitive gameplay hold it back from reaching its full potential. While fans of the original may appreciate revisiting this world, newcomers might find it showing its age.
