The Ratchet & Clank franchise has always been lauded for its innovative gameplay, engaging characters, and vibrant worlds. Having missed out on the original PlayStation 2 and 3 releases, I was eager to experience the 2016 PS4 remake, a reimagining of the original game tied to the animated movie. While the game largely delivers on its promise, a few shortcomings prevent it from reaching true perfection.

A Galactic Adventure Reforged

The story follows Ratchet, a young mechanic with dreams of becoming a Galactic Ranger, and Clank, a defective warbot with a heart of gold. Their paths cross when Clank crash lands near Ratchet’s workshop, carrying a dire warning about an impending threat to the galaxy. Together, they embark on a quest to save the galaxy from the evil Chairman Drek and his destructive plans. While the narrative follows a familiar “unlikely hero” trope, the witty dialogue, unexpected plot twists, and charming interactions between Ratchet and Clank (at least initially) make the journey enjoyable. Supporting characters like Captain Qwark and Cora Veralux add to the colorful cast, although their roles feel somewhat truncated, perhaps due to the game’s connection to the movie.

An Arsenal of Wacky Weaponry

One of the franchise’s hallmarks is its creative arsenal, and this remake doesn’t disappoint. Alongside returning favorites, the game introduces new weapons like the bomb-scattering Bouncer and the pixelating “8-bit” gun. The Groovitron Glove, which forces enemies to dance uncontrollably, is a particular highlight and can even be used against bosses. Collecting bolts, the game’s currency, is crucial for acquiring and upgrading these weapons. Diamond bolts, hidden throughout the levels, unlock further upgrades, encouraging exploration and rewarding thorough players.

Combat in Ratchet & Clank is fast-paced and frenetic, requiring players to utilize their diverse arsenal strategically. The game also incorporates platforming elements, aerial sequences, and even spaceship battles, keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting. Interspersed throughout the action are challenging puzzles, including laser redirection and Clank-specific sections that require clever manipulation of robotic helpers. These puzzles are well-designed and progressively challenging, offering a satisfying break from the action.

Exploring a Vibrant Galaxy

The game boasts 13 diverse planets and locations, each brimming with secrets to uncover. Collectibles like Gold Bolts unlock cheat codes and skins, while collectible cards offer gameplay boosts. These hidden treasures encourage thorough exploration and reward players who venture off the beaten path. The game also offers a Challenge Mode after completion, allowing players to further upgrade their weapons and experience increased difficulty without replaying the entire story.

A Visual and Auditory Feast

From the moment the game begins, players are treated to a visual spectacle. The environments are stunningly detailed, with vibrant colors, realistic lighting, and impressive draw distances. Character models are equally impressive, resembling characters from a Pixar film. The voice acting is top-notch, capturing the personality of each character perfectly. The soundtrack is equally captivating, blending orchestral scores with playful melodies that perfectly complement the on-screen action.

A Missed Opportunity for Dynamic Duo Gameplay

Despite its strengths, Ratchet & Clank suffers from a lack of true co-op gameplay between its titular characters. While they interact in cutscenes and dialogue, there’s little in-game synergy between them. Clank primarily serves as a backpack accessory, missing opportunities for combined attacks or puzzle-solving mechanics. This feels like a missed opportunity, especially for a remake that could have expanded upon the original’s gameplay. Similarly, the truncated roles of supporting characters, seemingly a result of the movie tie-in, detract from the overall narrative experience.

Ratchet & Clank on PS4 is a beautiful reimagining of a classic, boasting stunning visuals, engaging gameplay, and a charming story. However, the lack of true co-op gameplay between Ratchet and Clank and the somewhat underdeveloped supporting characters prevent it from reaching its full potential. Despite these flaws, the game offers a thoroughly enjoyable experience, particularly for fans of platformers and action-adventure games.
