PS5 Shortages Likely to Continue Into Next Year
Sony recently revealed to analysts that the PlayStation 5 shortage is likely to persist into next year. “I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand,” Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s chief financial officer, told analysts in a briefing last week.
Previously, in a meeting with investors, Totoki stated that supply issues would not be fully resolved in the short term.

Totoki also hinted that Sony is exploring various solutions to address the hardware shortage, including potentially redesigning the PS5 or seeking secondary component suppliers. “The shortage of semiconductors is one factor, but there are other factors that will impact the production volume,” he explained. “So, at this point in time, we just want to aim at beating the second year sales target of 14.8 million units.”
According to a report released on May 5, 2021, Sony announced that PS5 sales slightly surpassed PS4 sales during the same period.
Currently, reports indicate that both Nintendo and Microsoft are also experiencing hardware production challenges due to the ongoing semiconductor shortage. This global chip shortage continues to impact the gaming industry, making it difficult for consumers to purchase the latest consoles. Sony’s proactive approach to exploring alternative solutions suggests a commitment to meeting the high demand for the PS5, but the ongoing challenges indicate that securing a console may remain difficult for the foreseeable future.
