Metal Slug: Awakening crowned its first national champions in the Metal Slug National Championship (MSNC), marking the first eSports tournament for the Run ‘n Gun genre in Vietnam. The tournament, held in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from December 8th to 24th, 2023, culminated in a thrilling National Final where the top 8 teams from across the country battled for supremacy.

The Grand Finals saw a clash of titans between Quan Đoàn Top, representing the South, and Quan Đoàn Cày Ruộng, representing the North. Both teams, champions of their respective regions, delivered an intense and captivating Mech Showdown.

Quan Đoàn Top, with their seasoned experience and strategic gameplay, ultimately dominated the competition, securing a decisive victory and claiming the inaugural championship title for Metal Slug: Awakening in Vietnam.

Throughout both the semi-finals and the Grand Finals, Quan Đoàn Top maintained their exceptional form, achieving perfect wins against all opponents. Trailing closely behind with an equally impressive performance was Quan Đoàn Cày Ruộng, the top team from the Northern region. The remaining two spots in the top 4 were claimed by Out Trình and Spearhead Squadron, both representing the South.

Meet the Champions

Quan Đoàn Top consists of three members: Hứa Tuấn Kiệt (born 1993), Hồ Văn Âu (born 1997), and Trần Ngọc Nhân (born 1999). All three are members of the same guild on Server 1, having played the game since its beta testing phase and continuing their journey together in the official release. Traveling north for the finals, these three players brought with them the warmth and fiery competitive spirit of the South, delivering thrilling matches for the audience.

A representative from Quan Đoàn Top shared their thoughts: “Traveling from the South to the North, we hadn’t had much time to acclimatize to the cold weather in Hanoi before facing Quan Đoàn Cày Ruộng, a strong contender for the championship title. We were nervous and excited. However, we brought with us the passion and ambition of our fellow Southern players. By studying our opponent’s playstyle and devising appropriate strategies, we ultimately secured the championship.”

A New Era for Run ‘n Gun eSports

The Metal Slug National Championship is the first tournament for Metal Slug: Awakening organized by VNGGames in Vietnam. A representative from Game Studio 9 (VNGGames) stated: “VNGGames hopes that this inaugural season will lay the foundation for a professional eSports tournament system for the Run ‘n Gun genre, opening up more opportunities for Vietnamese gamers who love this genre in particular, and competitive gaming in general.”
