LittleBigPlanet 3 Review: A Charming Platformer with New Characters and Challenges

LittleBigPlanet has been a successful platforming franchise since its debut, thanks to its simple gameplay and extensive customization options. Sackboy, the series’ protagonist, has even become one of Sony’s mascots. With five titles already released on various PlayStation consoles and handhelds, the sixth installment, LittleBigPlanet 3, was highly anticipated. Developed by Sumo Digital, known for their sports games, rather than the series’ creators, Media Molecule, the question remained: could LittleBigPlanet 3 maintain the series’ legacy?

An Engaging Story with New Playable Characters

While the first two LittleBigPlanet games prioritized gameplay over narrative, Sumo Digital chose to enhance the story in LittleBigPlanet 3. The plot is simple: Sackboy is tricked by Newton (voiced by Hugh Laurie of House M.D. fame) into releasing three monstrous Titans, threatening Bunkum. To save the world, Sackboy must embark on a quest to find the legendary heroes who originally defeated the Titans.

The three heroes, Oddsock, Toggle, and Swoop, are also new playable characters, each with unique abilities. Oddsock, resembling a dog, can run fast, climb walls, and wall-jump, making him ideal for navigating obstacles.

Swoop, a bird, can fly, while Toggle can switch between large and small forms, altering his weight for puzzle-solving and traversal. These characters, designed in the series’ signature fabric style, offer a refreshing gameplay experience and prevent the game from feeling repetitive. Each new character, excluding Sackboy, is fully voiced, adding another layer of charm to the game.

Enhanced Gameplay and Increased Difficulty

LittleBigPlanet 3 consists of four main levels: a prologue and three levels corresponding to each new character’s introduction. Sackboy hasn’t been forgotten either; he’s equipped with new gadgets to enhance his mobility and reach. These include a pumpinator to blow and suck objects, a torch to reveal hidden items, and teleporting balls. He also gains access to a hat for light-path navigation and boots for double-jumping, allowing for more dynamic movement and puzzle-solving.

The levels themselves are significantly more challenging. LittleBigPlanet 3 is arguably the most difficult entry in the series, featuring numerous traps and obstacles that require precise timing and gadget combinations. Frequent deaths and respawns are part of the experience, encouraging players to learn from their mistakes and providing a satisfying sense of accomplishment upon completing a challenging level.

Robust Customization Options and Creative Tools

A hallmark of the LittleBigPlanet series, the level creation tools return in LittleBigPlanet 3. Players can design their own levels and share them online, allowing for near-infinite replayability. The game includes all previous assets from LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2, offering a vast library of objects, costumes, and decorations.

For newcomers to level creation, the “Popit Puzzles” mode introduces the design tools through simple yet engaging puzzles. Each puzzle focuses on a specific tool, teaching players how to manipulate objects, place traps, and build basic structures. As players progress, the puzzles become more complex, encouraging creativity and preparing them for more advanced level design.

Cooperative Play Limitations

For the first time in the series, LittleBigPlanet 3 offers cooperative gameplay. While exciting, this feature has some drawbacks. Levels are designed for specific characters, restricting players to a single character type without the ability to switch. This can be frustrating for players who want to experience the game with their preferred character.

This limitation even extends to single-player mode. Players often spend extended periods controlling Sackboy, unable to switch to other characters until the game explicitly allows it. While one level offers free character switching, it’s a missed opportunity given the diverse roster and the potential for varied gameplay.

Conclusion

LittleBigPlanet 3 expands on the series’ formula with new characters, gadgets, and a more engaging story. The increased difficulty and robust level creation tools offer a challenging and rewarding experience. However, the limitations of cooperative play and character switching are noticeable drawbacks. Despite these shortcomings, LittleBigPlanet 3 remains a charming and creative platformer that fans of the series and newcomers alike can enjoy.
