AMD Ryzen 7840U: Challenging Apple’s M2 and Intel’s Dominance
Contents
After entering the handheld gaming chip market with the Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme, AMD recently unveiled the Ryzen 7040U series for “ultra-thin” laptops. The flagship Ryzen 7840U promises performance that rivals, and even surpasses, Apple’s M2 chip found in the MacBook Air.
According to AMD, the Ryzen 7840U can outperform the M2 in “application performance” by up to 75% in processing tasks while delivering more than double the performance of the Intel Core i7-1360P. Compared to its predecessor, the Ryzen 6850H, the 7840U boasts up to a 24% performance improvement.

Gaming Performance: A Significant Leap
In gaming, the integrated Radeon 780M graphics within the Ryzen 7840U reportedly delivers double the performance of the Iris Xe graphics in the Core i7-1360P in Cyberpunk 2077, with at least a 30% increase in less demanding titles like DOTA 2, CS:GO, and Total War: Three Kingdoms.

Battery Life: Promising Efficiency
Beyond raw performance, AMD claims the Ryzen 7840U offers “class-leading efficiency for excellent battery life,” though specific figures remain undisclosed. It’s possible that laptops equipped with the Ryzen 7840U are not yet in production, making comprehensive battery life testing difficult for AMD. For comparison, Apple states the M2 in the MacBook Air provides up to 15 hours of battery life for web browsing and up to 18 hours for video playback.
