At Computex 2019 in Taipei on May 27th, AMD announced its new RDNA graphics architecture and teased upcoming Navi GPUs based on this advanced technology. Moving beyond the long-standing GCN (Graphic Core Next) architecture for mid-range and high-end products, and the Vega architecture for its top-tier offerings, AMD is introducing RDNA to the market.

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su stated that RDNA is a completely redesigned architecture, aiming to elevate the Radeon brand and compete directly with Nvidia’s Turing architecture in the mid-range and high-end GPU market. This marks a significant shift from the aging GCN architecture.

RDNA promises significant performance improvements, boasting a 25% increase in performance per clock and a 50% improvement in performance per watt compared to GCN. These gains highlight AMD’s focus on efficiency and power alongside raw performance. The first products to utilize the RDNA architecture will be the upcoming AMD Navi RX 5000 series GPUs. Dr. Su explained that the “5000” designation commemorates AMD’s 50th anniversary.

Navi’s Performance Potential

AMD offered a brief demonstration of the new Navi GPU’s capabilities at Computex. Benchmarking the Navi GPU against Nvidia’s RTX 2070 in the game Strange Brigade, the Navi-powered system delivered 10% higher average frame rates. This suggests that the successor to the RX 590 will compete directly with the RTX 2070 in the mid-range to high-end graphics card market.

Looking Ahead to E3

While AMD showcased Navi’s potential, details regarding specifications and pricing remain under wraps. However, the company confirmed a July launch window for the Navi RX 5000 series. A more comprehensive unveiling, including detailed specifications and pricing, is expected at E3 on June 10th.
