Enhanced Performance and Extended Playtime

Building on the success of the original ROG Ally and incorporating global user feedback, the ROG Ally X boasts several key enhancements. One of the most significant is the upgrade to a 1TB SSD, doubling the storage capacity of its predecessor and providing ample space for a vast game library.

Furthermore, the ROG Ally X features a new motherboard with an M.2 2280 slot for easy storage upgrades. Complementing the increased storage is a boost to 24GB of DDR5-7500 RAM, crucial for maximizing the performance of the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU. Since the GPU shares memory with the system RAM, this larger capacity allows users to allocate more memory to both the system and GPU, improving performance, especially in demanding AAA titles with detailed graphics and high VRAM requirements. These changes make the ROG Ally X more than a simple upgrade; it’s a substantial evolution in handheld PC gaming.

Power and Portability: A Larger Battery without the Bulk

Another significant improvement is the 80Wh battery, currently the largest capacity available in a handheld gaming device. This extended battery life allows for longer gaming sessions without needing to constantly recharge. Despite the significant increase in battery capacity, the ROG Ally X is only 70 grams heavier than the original ROG Ally, weighing in at 678 grams. The weight distribution is optimized to center around the player’s thumb and index finger, ensuring comfortable extended play and easy portability.

Dual USB-C Ports and Refined Controls

Responding to user requests for more I/O options, the ROG Ally X replaces the XG Mobile port with two USB-C® ports, one of which is a Thunderbolt™ compatible USB 4.0 port, ensuring wide compatibility with various peripherals. This allows for simultaneous charging and device connectivity, significantly enhancing user convenience. A subtle yet impactful change is the new sleek black chassis, adding a touch of sophistication to the device’s aesthetic. The hand grips are now deeper and more rounded for improved comfort, catering to gamers with larger hands. Buttons and joysticks are strategically positioned and angled for optimal ergonomics, enhancing overall control. The rear macro buttons are smaller to minimize accidental presses while remaining easily accessible when needed.

Enhanced Cooling System for Optimal Performance

The ROG Ally X incorporates 50% thinner fan blades compared to the ROG Ally, leading to improved cooling efficiency. The redesigned cooling system with two upward-facing exhaust vents and one on the top edge provides 24% greater airflow, cooling not only the internal components but also the touchscreen, reducing temperatures by up to 6°C for comfortable extended use. The joysticks also feature upgraded modules with enhanced durability, boasting a lifespan of up to 5 million uses. Reinforced springs ensure consistent and precise responsiveness over time. The D-Pad has also been refined for more accurate eight-directional control in fighting and retro games.

Conclusion: The Future of Handheld PC Gaming

The ROG Ally X represents a significant leap forward in handheld PC gaming. With its upgraded hardware, enhanced ergonomics, and extended battery life, it promises a truly immersive and portable gaming experience. The increased storage, RAM, and dual USB-C ports address key user feedback from the original ROG Ally, making the X a more versatile and powerful device. ASUS has clearly listened to its community and delivered a handheld gaming console that pushes the boundaries of performance and portability.
