Hitman 2: A Worthy Successor, But Not Without Its Quirks

Hitman 2 arrived a little over two and a half years after the 2016 episodic release of Hitman, quickly solidifying its place among fans of Agent 47 and the stealth-action genre. While the 2016 release was critically acclaimed and marked a successful return for the franchise, it underperformed financially, leading to Square Enix dropping IO Interactive. Fortunately, IO retained the rights and partnered with Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment to bring us this sequel. Hitman 2 builds upon the solid foundation of its predecessor, delivering an excellent stealth experience, but does it truly innovate?

Hitman “Season” 2: Expanding on Excellence

Hitman 2 is a peculiar sequel. It feels more like a large-scale expansion, a “season two” to the episodic 2016 release, rather than a full-fledged sequel. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The previous game set a high bar for stealth-action, and Hitman 2 wisely chooses to refine and expand upon that existing framework.

IO Interactive maintains the open-ended level design, offering players a sandbox of possibilities within expansive maps. From a bustling Miami racetrack to a remote fishing village in South America, a dense Mumbai slum to a mysterious island in the North Sea, each location is brimming with opportunities for creative assassinations. The game encourages exploration, planning, and experimentation, rewarding players who master the environment and its intricate systems.

The game’s tagline, “Make The World Your Weapon,” is more than just marketing. Understanding the world, how its elements interact, and manipulating those interactions is key to success. Observing targets, learning their routines, and exploiting opportunities are crucial to executing the perfect hit. Hitman 2 demands patience and meticulous planning, rewarding players with immense satisfaction when their intricate plans unfold flawlessly.

Unlike the episodic release of its predecessor, Hitman 2 delivers a more consistent experience across its levels. Each location offers a distinct flavor and presents unique challenges, maintaining a high level of quality throughout.

Refining the Formula: New Features and Improvements

Hitman 2 doesn’t just iterate; it introduces meaningful additions to the core gameplay. Players can now blend into crowds, concealing themselves from suspicious eyes, and utilize foliage for cover and to hide weapons and bodies. The briefcase makes a welcome return, allowing players to discreetly carry larger items, including sniper rifles. Mirrors now reflect Agent 47’s image, adding another layer of challenge to stealth approaches. Real-time visual notifications replace text-based alerts, providing more immediate feedback. Instinct mode now displays the vision cones of security cameras, enhancing situational awareness.

Visually and aurally, Hitman 2 surpasses its predecessor with enhanced graphics and sound design, creating a more immersive experience. Three difficulty settings cater to players of all skill levels, from newcomers to seasoned veterans seeking a challenge.

Legacy Content and New Modes: A Generous Offering

Owners of the 2016 Hitman can experience all of its levels within Hitman 2, updated with the sequel’s improved graphics, mechanics, and equipment. This allows for a seamless transition between the two games and provides a fresh perspective on familiar locations.

Hitman 2 also introduces new multiplayer modes, including the competitive “Ghost Mode” and the cooperative “Sniper Assassin” mode, offering even more ways to enjoy the game.

Inconsistent AI and Lack of Item Innovation: Areas for Improvement

Despite its strengths, Hitman 2 suffers from some inconsistencies in its AI behavior. NPC routines and reactions can be unpredictable, sometimes breaking immersion and disrupting carefully laid plans. The game also features overly perceptive NPCs who can identify Agent 47 in disguise under improbable circumstances.

Another area for improvement is the lack of truly innovative items. Many unlockable weapons and gadgets are reskins of existing equipment from the previous game, limiting their impact on gameplay.

Conclusion: A Solid Sequel with Room to Grow

Hitman 2 successfully builds upon the strong foundation of its predecessor, offering refined gameplay, expansive levels, and new features. While inconsistent AI and a lack of item innovation hold it back from true greatness, it remains a highly enjoyable stealth-action experience. The inclusion of legacy content and new multiplayer modes further enhances its value. With future installments, addressing these shortcomings could elevate the series to even greater heights.
