League of Legends Icon Uzi Announces Retirement

Uzi, a legendary figure in the Chinese League of Legends scene, officially announced his retirement on June 3, 2020. This news, while rumored since RNG acquired Betty, still sent shockwaves through the esports community. RNG, on their official Weibo page, expressed their deep gratitude for Uzi’s contributions over the past four years.

Shortly after RNG’s announcement, Uzi himself confirmed the news on his personal page, marking the end of his eight-year professional career. His statement detailed the health issues that ultimately led to this difficult decision.

Health Concerns Force Retirement

Uzi revealed that the pressures of professional play, coupled with an unhealthy lifestyle, led to a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. Despite efforts to manage the condition through diet and exercise over the past six months, his health did not improve. The medication, he explained, negatively impacted his mental well-being. Combined with existing wrist injuries, Uzi’s doctors advised him that his health could no longer sustain the demands of professional competition.

A Legacy of Success and Dedication

Uzi’s career began in 2012 with Royal Club, the precursor to Royal Never Give Up (RNG). His journey included stints with Qiao Gu Reapers, OMG, and New Bee. However, it was with RNG that Uzi truly shone.

After heartbreaking defeats in the finals of the League of Legends World Championship in both 2013 and 2014, Uzi finally achieved victory. In 2018, he led RNG to victory in both the Spring and Summer LPL splits. This culminated in a triumphant win against Kingzone DragonX at the 2018 Mid-Season Invitational, breaking Korea’s dominance on the international stage.

A Golden Year and a Bright Future

Uzi’s 2018 success extended to the Asian Games, where he secured a gold medal for China. This marked the pinnacle of an incredible year for the iconic ADC.

At only 23 years old, Uzi boasts an impressive list of accomplishments during his eight-year career. While his professional playing days are over, his impact on the League of Legends esports scene will be felt for years to come. We wish Uzi all the best in his future endeavors.
