Microsoft Develops Switch-Inspired Controller for Mobile Gaming

Microsoft is developing a prototype for a new mobile gaming controller, drawing inspiration from the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con design, according to a recent patent filing discovered by Windows Central. This move comes as Microsoft continues to expand its cloud gaming platform, Project xCloud, aiming to provide a robust alternative to competitors like Google Stadia.

Addressing the Limitations of Mobile Gaming

Mobile gaming has seen tremendous growth, but touchscreen controls often limit the experience. Complex games like Arena of Valor and Black Desert Online require intricate on-screen button layouts and gestures, which can’t replicate the precision and comfort of a dedicated controller. Recognizing this, Microsoft is seeking to bridge the gap with its new controller design.

The Design: A Modular Approach

The patent filings showcase a modular controller reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons. The design depicts two detachable controller sections that can be attached to a mobile device or connected to a central bridge, offering flexibility for various play styles.

The controller features familiar elements found in traditional Xbox One controllers: two analog sticks, eight buttons, two directional pads, and more. It also appears to support dock charging, providing a convenient way to keep the controller powered up.

From Prototype to Reality

While the current designs are conceptual and reportedly made from foam, they indicate Microsoft’s serious consideration of this new controller. This move aligns with their ongoing investment in Project xCloud, which allows users to stream Xbox games to various devices, including smartphones and tablets.

Project xCloud and the Future of Mobile Gaming

At E3, Project xCloud was demonstrated using an Xbox One controller and a phone mount. However, this new controller offers a more integrated and portable solution, potentially enhancing the cloud gaming experience. This dedicated mobile controller could provide a significant advantage over competitors like Google Stadia, offering a more seamless and console-like experience on the go.

A Strategic Move in Cloud Gaming

The development of this controller underscores Microsoft’s commitment to cloud gaming and its ambition to provide a premium mobile gaming experience. By addressing the limitations of touchscreen controls, Microsoft aims to attract a wider audience to Project xCloud and solidify its position in the increasingly competitive cloud gaming market. This new controller could be the key to unlocking the full potential of mobile gaming with Project xCloud.
