Moero Chronicle Arrives on PC: A Monster Girl RPG Adventure

The Genkai Tokki series, a collaboration between Idea Factory and Compile Heart, has seen several entries since Moero Chronicle (originally Moe Chronicle) debuted on PlayStation Vita in 2014. Following releases like Monster Monpiece, Moero Crystal, and Genkai Tokki: Seven Pirates, Moero Chronicle is now making its way to PC via Steam on August 16th with updated visuals. This marks another opportunity for players to experience this unique monster girl RPG.

A Shy Hero in a World of Monster Girls

Moero Chronicle centers around Io, a young man living in Monstopia, a world where humans and monster girls coexist. Io, however, suffers from an extreme case of shyness around women, rendering him unable to communicate effectively with the opposite sex. His only female friend is Lilia, a monster girl who has been by his side since childhood.

This peaceful existence is shattered when the monster girls of Monstopia suddenly become aggressive and begin attacking humans. Io, surprisingly, is chosen as the hero to resolve this crisis. Accompanied by Lilia, he embarks on a quest to subdue the hostile monster girls and uncover the reason behind their sudden change in behavior.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Unlike the card-based gameplay of Monster Monpiece, Moero Chronicle is a turn-based RPG with a first-person perspective in battles. Players explore dungeons, collect items, and most importantly, tame monster girls. Tamed monster girls join Io’s party, while other captured monsters become support units, aiding the monster girls in combat. Players can form a party of up to five monster girls.

Customization plays a role, allowing players to tailor outfits and accessories for their monster girls. Building relationships through conversations, gifts, and a unique “stimulation” mechanic strengthens bonds and provides combat benefits. This “stimulation” mechanic is carried over from Monster Monpiece, where it was used to power up cards.

In battles, Io supports his monster girls with items and “affection points,” while the monster girls utilize attacks and skills. Elemental affinities influence combat effectiveness, adding a layer of strategy. The combat system emphasizes simplicity and accessibility, in line with Idea Factory and Compile Heart’s RPG design philosophy.

Shallow Gameplay Holds Back the Experience

Despite the variety of mechanics, Moero Chronicle inherits a significant flaw from Monster Monpiece: a lack of depth in gameplay. Battles are generally too easy, even for newcomers to the genre. Simply leveling up along the intended progression path allows players to overcome most challenges without much strategic thought. This undermines the combat system and renders much of the strategic elements redundant.

Even the boss battles against monster girls, which should be a highlight, fail to provide a significant challenge. The most engaging aspect becomes the taming minigame, which involves repetitive actions. While the visual appeal of the monster girls is a draw, the repetitive gameplay loop and easy battles may not hold players’ attention for long. Increasing the difficulty can lead to unbalanced and frustrating encounters, further hindering the experience.

Conclusion

Moero Chronicle offers a lighthearted RPG experience with charming monster girl characters. However, the shallow gameplay and lack of challenge may disappoint players seeking a more engaging experience. While the PC release provides an opportunity for a wider audience to experience the game, it remains to be seen whether the core gameplay issues have been addressed. The game’s appeal ultimately lies in its character designs and the unique taming mechanics, rather than its strategic depth.
