Nintendo’s Next-Gen Console: Development Kits Out, 2024 Launch Expected

Nintendo has reportedly provided key partner studios with development kits for its next-generation gaming console, aiming for a release in the latter half of 2024, according to sources cited by VGC. This timeline is strategically chosen to ensure ample stock at launch, avoiding the shortages that plagued the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S releases.

While specific details about the console remain tightly under wraps, VGC’s sources suggest a portable mode similar to the Nintendo Switch. This design choice indicates a continuation of Nintendo’s hybrid approach to gaming, allowing for both handheld and docked play.

Two separate VGC sources have also hinted at the inclusion of an LCD screen instead of a higher-end OLED display. This cost-saving measure likely aims to offset the increased storage demands of modern games. The current Switch offers only 32GB of internal storage, a stark contrast to the 100+GB requirements of many current-generation PlayStation and Xbox titles. This increased storage capacity suggests the next console will be capable of running more graphically demanding games.

Just like its predecessor, the next-gen Nintendo console will support physical game cartridges, sources confirm. This familiar format should appease fans of physical media and maintain a sense of continuity with the existing Switch ecosystem.

The question of backward compatibility with existing Switch games, both physical and digital, remains unanswered. Nintendo has expressed a desire to transition as many of its 100+ million Switch users as possible to the new platform.

However, some third-party publishers have reportedly voiced concerns that backward compatibility could negatively impact sales of next-generation titles. This concern highlights the delicate balance Nintendo must strike between supporting its existing user base and encouraging the adoption of new software.

The upcoming console launch represents a crucial moment for Nintendo. Balancing affordability, performance, and backward compatibility will be key to replicating the Switch’s phenomenal success.
