Seagate Launches Exos X18 18TB Enterprise Hard Drive

Seagate recently unveiled the Exos X18, an 18TB enterprise-grade hard drive. This new offering shares a similar capacity with the IronWolf Pro NAS drive, which Seagate launched earlier.

Like the IronWolf Pro, the Exos X18 utilizes conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology with nine platters, spinning at 7200 RPM within a helium-filled environment. It also features a 256MB cache.

The key differentiator between the two drives lies in the firmware. Seagate has optimized the Exos X18’s firmware for enterprise workloads, enabling it to handle large-scale data read/write operations. This specialized firmware also incorporates power management features tailored for enterprise use, extending the drive’s operational life to 2.5 million hours, compared to the IronWolf Pro’s 1.2 million hours.

This tailored firmware contributes to the Exos X18’s slightly improved read speed of 270MBps, a bump up from the IronWolf Pro’s 260MBps. However, this performance enhancement comes with a marginally higher power consumption, peaking at 9.4W under full load and 5.3W in idle mode.

Alongside the Exos X18, Seagate also introduced the Exos System, a new storage rack system available in three variants: the AP series for x86 systems, the X series with RAID configurations, and the E series featuring JBOD setups.

In summary, the Seagate Exos X18 18TB hard drive offers enterprise-level performance and reliability with enhanced firmware, optimized power management, and a higher workload rating compared to its NAS counterpart. Coupled with the new Exos System rack solutions, Seagate provides a comprehensive storage solution for demanding business environments.
