Tales of Arise: A JRPG Renaissance

The Tales of series stands as one of gaming’s longest-running JRPG franchises, alongside titans like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. It boasts a rich history of critically acclaimed entries, including Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Berseria, and Tales of Vesperia. Yet, despite its dedicated fanbase, the series hasn’t quite achieved mainstream international recognition like some of its contemporaries. With Tales of Arise, Bandai Namco aimed to change that. Transitioning to Unreal Engine 4, overhauling the graphics and gameplay, Tales of Arise represents a bold attempt to elevate the series onto the global stage. Does it succeed?

A Legacy Reforged

Tales of Arise immerses players in a world divided: Dahna, a medieval planet oppressed for 300 years by the technologically advanced Renans of Rena. The Renans, operating from their orbital base Lenegis, have enslaved the Dahnans, systematically erasing their history and culture. Dahna is divided into five realms, each ruled by a Renan lord who participates in a decennial competition to become Rena’s next sovereign. This competition involves extracting Spirit Cores, the life force of Dahnans, causing immense suffering. Players take on the role of Alphen, an amnesiac Dahnan slave known as the “Iron Mask,” who feels no pain. He encounters Shionne, a Renan on the run after stealing a Master Core, a powerful artifact. Shionne is afflicted with thorns that shock anyone who touches her—except Alphen.

A Story of Liberation and its Aftermath

Together, Alphen and Shionne embark on a quest to overthrow the five lords, liberate Dahna, and uncover the secrets binding the two worlds. While the initial premise follows a familiar JRPG trope – heroes overthrowing an oppressive regime – Tales of Arise delves deeper, exploring the complexities of liberation. The narrative tackles the insidious nature of oppression beyond physical violence, examining the psychological scars left on a subjugated populace. It highlights the challenges of maintaining independence and fostering trust in a society fractured by centuries of mistrust.

Evolved Combat: Fluid and Strategic

Tales of Arise abandons the series’ traditional Linear Motion Battle System (LMBS) in favor of a dynamic action-oriented combat system. Players can freely move in 3D space, utilizing basic attacks, Artes (special skills), and dodges. The Arts Gauge allows for more frequent use of Artes, while the Boost Strike mechanic encourages strategic combos for devastating finishing moves. Each character possesses unique Boost Attacks, adding another layer of tactical depth. Managing CP, a finite resource for healing Artes, becomes crucial for survival, especially during challenging boss battles.

Quality of Life Improvements

Tales of Arise incorporates numerous quality-of-life improvements. Early access to fast travel, a streamlined equipment system, and the integration of Titles (achievements) as skill trees enhance the overall gameplay experience. Skits, the series’ signature dialogue sequences, are now presented in 3D, adding a new level of expressiveness to character interactions.

Room for Improvement

Despite its strengths, Tales of Arise isn’t without flaws. The enemy variety is disappointingly limited, with reskinned versions of the same creatures appearing throughout the game. Some plot points feel predictable and clichéd.
